What is an approved taxi (taxi conventionné)?

“Taxi conventionné” logo – French health insurance

A taxi approved by French health insurance has signed an agreement with the local French health insurance fund (CPAM). It can therefore provide patient transport covered by French health insurance, just like a light medical vehicle (VSL). This is known as professional seated transport : you travel seated, accompanied by a professional driver.

You can recognise it by the blue “Taxi conventionné – Organismes d’assurance maladie” sticker on the rear window of the vehicle. This matters: only journeys made in an approved taxi can be reimbursed. A regular taxi or a ride-hailing car (VTC), even for a medical appointment, is entirely at your own expense.

It is your doctor who chooses the means of transport suited to your state of health (approved taxi, VSL, ambulance, own vehicle or public transport) and states it on the medical transport prescription.

Approved taxi or VSL? Both fall under professional seated transport. A VSL is reserved for medical transport, whereas an approved taxi also carries regular passengers: for you, the coverage is the same as long as your prescription allows it. Our advantage: a dedicated driver, comfortable vehicles and flexible organisation, adapted to your treatment schedule.

Which journeys can you make with our approved taxi?

With a medical prescription, French health insurance can cover your journeys depending on your situation and the conditions it sets. Here are the journeys we make most often from Evry:

Hospital admission and discharge

We will drive you to the hospital or clinic on the day of your admission and take you back home on discharge, luggage included.

Regular treatments

Dialysis, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, day hospital : journeys planned in advance, at the same times, with a driver you know.

Consultations and examinations

Appointments with a specialist, imaging scans or check-ups, especially when they relate to a long-term illness.

Medical summons

Summons from the health insurance medical service, a medical expert or a medical device fitting.

Workplace accident

Journeys related to a workplace accident or an occupational disease, as prescribed by your doctor.

Long distances

Journeys to a hospital in Paris or outside Île-de-France: over 150 km one way, a prior approval from your health insurance fund is required.

How does your medical transport work?

1

Your doctor writes the prescription

Before the journey, your doctor fills in the medical transport prescription (the “transport voucher”), specifying an approved taxi or professional seated transport. Except in an emergency, it must be issued before the journey.

2

You book your taxi

Call us on +33 6 69 70 91 91 or +33 6 68 85 42 21, or book online. Give us the date, appointment time, department address and, if needed, your return time.

3

We pick you up

When your driver meets you for your appointment outside your home, you will have help getting into the vehicle and with your belongings.

4

You show your documents

Bring the medical transport prescription and your Carte Vitale or up-to-date certificate of entitlement : we fill in the section for the transport provider.

5

Return and invoicing

After your treatment, we will take you back home. The invoice is based on the rates agreed with French health insurance.

Coverage and reimbursement: what you need to know

The reimbursement rate

Health insurance covers a part of the agreed rate, and up to 100% in certain situations (exempting long-term illness, work accident, occupational disease, maternity…). Your top-up health insurance (mutuelle) can cover the rest.

No upfront payment

Depending on your situation, you may be eligible for direct billing (tiers payant) and not pay the covered share upfront. Check with your health insurance fund or ask us when booking.

The medical deductible

A medical deductible applies to each journey by approved taxi, VSL or ambulance, subject to daily and annual limits. It is deducted from your reimbursements, unless exempt.

Shared transport

When your health permits, a shared journey with another patient may be offered to you. In case of refusal, you lose the upfront payment exemption and the reimbursement conditions may change.

Prior approval

For a journey of over 150 km one way, or for repeated transport (at least 4 trips of more than 50 km one way in 2 months for the same treatment), a request for prior approval is required, except in special cases.

Documents to keep

Keep the medical transport prescription, the invoice and, where applicable, the prior approval : these are your proof for reimbursement.

Rates, caps and coverage conditions are set by French health insurance and change regularly. To find out your specific situation, consult ameli.fr or contact your health insurance fund.

We know the access routes, car parks and entrances of the facilities in the Evry area. You are dropped off as close as possible to the department where you are expected, and we agree on your return time.
